How long have you been creating and how did you get started? I have been buying Vintage Jewelry since the 1970's. I was always enthralled with my mother's jewelry box which was filled with the very best costume jewelry from America and around the world. Tell us about your work space: My basement is where I work. I follow in my father's footsteps, since he ran a home base business from 1970's to 2008.

Any advice for those thinking about starting their own business? Be Flexible. Be willing to change.

Fun facts about yourself: I would love to be able to divide my time between Florida during the cold winters in NJ, Spring and Fall in New Jersey. I would love to have a beach house in Cape Cod for the Summer. This way, I would get the best of all the season.

General Location: We are located in sunny Central Florida - near Orlando.

Business Name: Featuring Animals

What do you create/sell? Our products include photographs of exotic animals from our worldwide trips as well as our own personal exotic and domestic animals. We also have apparel, mousepads, notecards, and gifts that also feature our beautiful animals. Our "featured" animal is Cairo, our white bengal tiger cub. He is the master behind all of our creations!

What inspired your shop name? Our love for our animals as well as those we have the opportunity to photograph in their natural habitat inspired our name. Our white tiger cub, Cairo has inspired many of our creations and continues to be our muse!

How long have you been creating and how did you get started? The is a multi-level question as there are many great minds collaborating in our business.

I have always had a passion for animals. All I ever wanted out of life was to be with animals - domestic, exotic, and farm animals. I have had many dogs and cats throughout my life and have been riding and showing horses for over 20 years. I have worked for many years as a vet tech with small, large, and exotic animals.

My boyfriend's passion for exotic animals started 40 years ago as a child. As he matured, his love for animals grew and he was able to turn his passion into a career - he provides weird, wild, and wacky insurance for animal transport, special events, and private owners worldwide. His travels for work (and sometimes play) have taken us on many wonderful adventures, allowing us to experience and photograph many incredible animals.

My mother, Danielle, started her pet embroidery business - Chilly Paws - a few years ago on etsy and at local craft fairs. Her business is dedicated to domestic pets - beds, sacks, shopping cart covers, towels, etc.

The three of us put our heads, hearts, and passions together and decided to enter into a new shop dedicated to exotic animals. Thus Featuring Animals was born!

Tell us about your work space: Our workspace is truly two locations:

1) The world is our canvas and backdrop. Through our travels, as well as in our own back yard, we are able to capture incredible moments with many different species. These photos and experiences serve as our initial ""work space.""

2) Once home, all photos are loaded onto the computer and evaluated for their superiority. The best of the best are kept and printed as well as used for other mediums (notecards, mousepads, etc). We also use some of the photos as inspiration for apparel - embroidered shirts, socks and sandals that need some extra bling, etc.

Any advice for those thinking about starting their own business? Patience is a virtue. No one becomes a great success overnight. Put your heart and soul into what you love....and be patient and persistent. Success will come in time!

Fun facts about yourself: My daily smiles and inspiration come from our four legged white bengal tiger cub son, Cairo. We raised him from 2 days old - he is now a magnificent 6 month old cub who is full of life and has an opinion about everything! He is our muse....and our boss!

About the Artist:

Robin grew up in Connecticut and now lives in Florida. As a child Robin could be seen sitting under the trees drawing on a huge chalkboard. She rode her bike where Foxwoods casino now sits near her hometown of Norwich, CT. She began fine art studies at the age of thirteen with her early exhibitions in a seaport town at The Mystic Art Association. Acknowledged for her luminous landscapes and captivating portraits Pedrero has since become an established award winning artist. . Pedrero works from her home studio in Florida, enjoying the company of her Shih Tzu Max.

American artist Robin Maria Pedrero is listed in Florida International Magazine’s 2009 Florida Artists Hall of Fame. She is an elected signature member of the Pastel Society of America. Her work is in film, galleries, & museum permanent collections. Pedrero’s art is a visual journey, where she captures life and simple pleasures applying rhythmic patterns, natural forms and geometrics in translucent layers. She responds to what catches her eyes and heart, drawing and painting with colors, shapes and lines. This beautiful heart-shaped window impression is made from hand-poured beeswax. The smell is both delightful and comforting; and retains the smell of honey!
The impression can be hung in a window year-round so the sun can shine through it,gently warm it, and release its scent. It also makes a pretty addition to a potpourri dish.
The heart has a border of flowers around the outside with two doves in the center. The birds are holding a ribbon between their feet. It is a gentle image...perfect for a home, nursery, or classroom.

I am a stay-at-home mom who homeschools my two daughters (ages 10 and 8). Both of my daughters were born in China, and adopted at 11 months and 10 months respectively.

My approach to homeschooling is rather eclectic -

combining Waldorf, Montessori, Charlotte Mason, and unit study approaches.

This combination works well with both daughters.

Harvest Moon by Hand offers some of the items

that I have created for an at-home learning environment.

I have always enjoyed crafting – especially embroidery,

needle-felting, needlepoint, crocheting, and cross-stitching.

I hope to pass the joy I feel when I craft along to those who purchase my items.

Because both my daughters love to play and use their imagination,

I have been making more of their toys and quilts by hand –

all from natural materials (primarily wool and cotton).

Knowing they have quality, safe (and lead-free) toys and quilts is important.

My hope is that the toys last and can be passed along to their children…

thereby, becoming family heirlooms.

Because the girls learn at home, I enjoy decorating the windows

with colorful window stars and creating seasonal nature tables for them.

Sunday Stalker - Honey from the Bee

Business Name: Honey from the Bee

What do you create/sell? Handmade artisan jewelry ranging from colorful semi-precious stone and lampwork bead jewelry to found-object mixed media pieces. Most of my work is one of a kind, as once I've fulfilled the vision I have for a piece I'm ready to move on to the next passionate creation.

What inspired your shop name? My maiden name was Bie, pronounced Bee. I'm kind of in to genealogy, among other things, and wanted to honor my ancestry. My brother actually came up with the name and my cousin designed my logo.

How long have you been creating and how did you get started? I've been a crafter all my life, but I started beading in the mid '90s as a way to fill the dark rainy months when we were living in Vancouver, Washington. After my career in high tech came to a close I jumped on the chance to become an artist full time. I've only been online for a couple years, but I did plenty of artisan shows and fairs for a few years to meet people and get feedback on what I was working on.

Tell us about your work space: "I have a fabulous studio that was meant to be a family room. In one corner I've got my desk and computer. Facing the window and out over the Strait of Juan du Fuca is an antique oak table I found on Craigs List. It's where I work so is often covered in tools and pieces of ideas, finished work materials and latest creation. I have to stop myself sometimes to clean up at least a bit so I have room to work. I've got lots of storage in a nearby closet as well as drawers within my room that have dividers in them for all of my beads and found objects.

The rest of my studio is out in the garage. That's where I do the stuff that needs a torch or chemicals. Right now the only two things I desire is a sink in the garage and a rolling mill."

Any advice for those thinking about starting their own business? "I think a lucky few have things go bonkers from the get go. I had that happen at art shows, but not online as of yet. Much of that is I'm kind of learning as I go - improving photos, getting my shop's name out (competition in jewelry field is fierce!) and learning the ropes.

You have to do it, because you love it and can't imagine doing anything else. When I'm in my studio I'm in my happy zone. I even love blogging now which is something I never thought I'd do, but it's a way for me to journal, communicate with those interested in my work, and network."

Fun facts about yourself: "My first idea for a career was to be an airline stewardess, but my Dad who was a Captain for an airline said be a pilot, not a stewardess. He felt they worked much harder than the pilots and got paid way less. I liked the glamour of the times... didn't want to be a pilot in the cockpit!

My second idea for a career was to be an archaelogist. The romance of being on a dig and discovering ancient artifacts while sleeping in tents near good looking scientists was very appealing. I made the mistake of getting married to my first husband instead of going to La Jolla and school waited.

Me now? I love to travel with my good looking numbers guy even though I really hate to fly!"

Making Goals For Your Shop For The New Year

Last year, UWIB discussed what goals each member had for their shop(s) for the new year. The discussion certainly hasn't stopped with last year's ball dropping. Many shop owners like to take the opportunity of a "fresh" start to set goals for their business and revamp their focus. The Etsy Forums and blogosphere are on fire about counting inventory and making spreadsheets with their new goals. Many sellers claim this helps them gain a fresh new perspective about their business and get psyched over revamping their shop.

The Business Topics Forum is a great place to start. You don't even need to be an Etsy member to have access to reading them.

Etsy seller absolutelysmall has posted their own spreadsheet version in the Forum post The Etsy Goal Spreadsheet for 2011.

At large Etsy Seller Timothy Adam recently posted his own Goal Tracker Spreadsheet on Handmadeology on Dec 30th.

Danielle wrote on The Etsy Blog on Dec 21st about The 21 Best Resources from the 2010 Business Blogosphere. Even if you're familiar with the subjects written about, it's always fun to brush up on the material and get a fresh new perspective for the new year.

How long have you been creating and how did you get started? Honestly, I needed money for a home I purchased. I moved my mother and sister into the home when they got laided off. I was the only one paying all the bills. I always wanted to sell lingerie, but thought it would be years away. Well, I googled lingerie wholesalers and found one that night..did very little research and charged $7000 on my credit card that night. I started doing home parties and the rest is history!

Tell us about your work space: It's more of a shipping area..and honestly, it's a bit of a mess. Maybe I am being overly critical...lol! I have a desk with all the cards I include in my packages, which includes my business cards and a postcard that give tips on caring for lingerie. Then there are bags and mailing bags, and tape and labels and so on. It's also my personal area, where I lay my bills that need to be paid, and other papers. That's the one area of the house that I just can't keep clear for long and that aggravates me! LOL

Any advice for those thinking about starting their own business? Don't give up if it is truly what you want to do. It is tough and challenging, but learn as much as you can before jumping in. Build networking contacts for help. Join groups that are relevant to the business you would like to start and don't be afraid to ask questions or for help.

Fun facts about yourself: I'm a nut! I love to laugh and have fun. I take my business very seriously, but I love to live life to the fullest. I have two dogs that I adore to death. I have collars and leashes for every occassion. My friends and family mean everything to me. I love to volunteer my time to great causes when I can.

Browsing the Etsy Forums: How To Succeed During the Slow Months

I am very lucky to have my handmade beauty company Mojo Spa for over ten years and every year I found myself having a hard time dealing with the slow months of January, February, and March. One year I had an epiphany that changed the way I did business during these slow months.

First and foremost I asked myself how I could I get more traffic to my website during the slow months when people are not really shopping like they do during the holidays. The first idea that came to my head was to have a contest for the “best testimonial” where I would send out an email to my customers asking them to write testimonials on their favorite product and the best one would win a $100 gift certificate. This did three things for my business:

1.It got my good customers to my website which in turn might to a little shopping when writing their testimonial.

2.Writing the testimonial would remind my customers how much they love the products and remind them to tell their friends, family, or co-workers.

3.Allowed me to get valuable testimonials that new customers could read and appreciate how effective my products actually are.

Getting testimonials is a big driver for an on-line business because the customer cannot touch, smell, or try on the item for size. This can be a disadvantage therefore great pictures are always suggested time and time again. Testimonials allow new customers to feel part of the experience of the product by living vicariously through that person’s testimonial. I have even bought a product based on a testimonial because the details listed fit my needs.

The second idea was coming out with limited edition products that could only be purchased during the slow months. If customers knew that they would have to act fast because there are limited supplies then they would purchase those items and not wait. These limited edition products are always based on something that is important and valuable to my customer. For example, I launched a line of cake soaps in certain scents that were in limited supply. I took my bestselling cake soaps and created a mad dash for my customers to purchase because they were new scents that were in limited supply. I even told them the amount I made which was thirty so customers would further understand the urgency to buy if they liked the scent.

The third idea is with “bundling” products. This means that you sell certain products together that would work together or look good together. I have a Men’s line that I sell called Buddha and I bundle all the products together in my Buddha Skincare Kit at a discount to encourage people to buy all the products instead of just one product. If you sell hats, then you might want to bundle it with a scarf or fingerless gloves so you can sell more at a slight discount. You might want to bundle 2 necklaces that are similar in style at a discount instead of marking them down so you sell 2 necklaces instead of 1. You do not need to sell yourself short and have a huge sale in January where you slash prices to the point where you do not make money or make very little profit. We are not a big retailer that can afford to do it and customers buy from us because they appreciate the unique design and quality that comes with our products. Try bundling your items for a discount instead of running a huge sale and you will find that you can make more money and sell more products in the process.

My fourth idea is become interactive with different forums, blogs, sellers, and/or teams. The slow months is when I come out of my hibernation of the holiday chaos and reach out to my fellow artists to help promote each other. I visit blogs that I like and try to do giveaways that would fit my target market, post helpful information on forums for other fellow sellers to benefit from and perhaps spread the word about my shop, post on my blog about helpful information that my customer would like so they stay in touch with my business. This is a time too to join teams, make treasuries, write other sellers that you admire and create a dialog that would benefit you both. For example sending out an email about your new products and blurb about this seller and the seller does the same for you. The support network you find in other artists is amazing because they understand better than anyone what you are going through and therefore can relate to you.

So in basic terms, use this time to get more exposure for your business, get great feedback from your customer that you can use for new customers, bundle instead of huge sales, and utilize other artists so you can help each other.

There is a universal truth though that the true path to get what you want is to give. When you give, you get. What you sow, you shall reap. If this is true, then what is it we must give? 1. Give Others Your Honesty. The world we live in has a simple rule that most follow: Lie when you have to. Unfortunately, this may make some people wealthy but it make us humans poor. To achieve success is to become wealthy not only in money, but in character. To be successful, truly successful, is to be able to attain your goals and keep your character at the same time!…
How about you? Are you honest in all things? The problem with little lies is they become big ones. Lies spin out of control. You get caught in one lie and you lie to get out of it etc. In all things and at all times, give others your honesty.

2. Give Others Your Respect. Most of the time we give people respect based on what they have done or what they have accomplished. We gauge whether or not they are "worthy" of it based on what we know of what they have achieved or who they know or are related to.
But I believe we should have a higher standard: We respect people not for what they have done or for who they are related to or for what they can do for us. Instead, we respect people for simply being.…

3. Give Others Your Vulnerability. We are taught to "be strong." And yes, we should be strong. But we have also embraced something that I think keeps us from having the kind of life that we long for. It is an idea that keeps us from experiencing the kind of relationships that would bring deep meaning to us. It is the idea of vulnerability.…
"But Chris, make yourself vulnerable and people will step all over you!" It is true that this will happen. But I have also seen that most people will be drawn to you. They will help you. They will open up to you. You see, we are all broken people inside. We all have secrets. Yet everyone plays the poser. When one let's down their veil, others soon follow—and we all win.

4. Give Others Your Care. Too many people are running around this old earth not caring about others. The days of "Look Out for Number One" and "Winning Through Intimidation" are over! Let's bring about a new day when we can care about others and succeed!
Take the time to show people you care. Listen to them. Empathize with them. Love them. Now, I don't mean that you have to go around hugging everyone—that probably wouldn't fly in corporate America anyway—but we can take some time to step back from business and be human! And I have found that when we do so, our business succeeds as well!

5. Give Others Your Passion. There is nothing this world needs more than passionate people. And people need passionate people. Living in this day and age can be tiring. The hustle and bustle of it all can wear you down and tire you out. Give your passion to others and fire them up.
Don't just be humdrum—be excited. Give people all the energy you can muster up. And you will find that energy reciprocal. They will get energized and passionate. This in turn will fire you up more when you are already charged and get you going altogether when you don't feel like moving at all!

6. Give Others Your Experience. We all have areas that we excel in and they are usually areas that we have experience in. One of the things we can do to make our lives more meaningful and be of utmost help to others is to show them the way through the experiences we have.
Sometimes it will be what they should do: Shortcuts to take, people to meet etc. Sometimes it will be what they should not do: Shortcuts not to take and people to stay away from! Whatever it is, we can be of service to others by giving them our experience and ultimately it will make us all better!

7. Give Others Your Help. All in all, what we want to do is to help others. Zig Ziglar says that if we will "help others get what they want, we will in turn get what we want." If we want to be successful, we should consider ourselves servants of other people. What can we do to help them and make them better? This is the true path to greatness and success, not only in business but in life!
